Bus Stop Improvement Project

Bus stops are the first points of entry to any public transportation system, and an important part of the transit experience. In collaboration with partner jurisdictions, the Bus Stop Improvement Project (BSIP) is our initiative to improve the accessibility and visibility of the YCT system.

Yamhill County Transit (YCT) is committed to providing safe, reliable, and accessible transportation services that enhance the quality of life of everyone in our community. This project was identified in the YCT Transit Development Plan (adopted in 2018) as a key priority to help the transit system grow and achieve its full ridership potential.

The Bus Stop Improvement Project is funded through the Statewide Transportation Improvement Fund (STIF), which receives funding from a statewide employee payroll tax adopted through HB2017.

The project is nearing some key actions to better identify bus stops/locations as part of our implementation plan. In consultation with ODOT, the City of McMinnville, and other Yamhill County communities, YCT has designed a phased plan for implementation based on street and roadway conditions. All of YCT’s 170 bus stops across the County have been sorted into phases, with early testing at select locations.

Highlights for what’s coming next:

• Ten (10) bus stops will be first to have permanent posts and signage installed.
• All bus stops along Route 2 will be marked with temporary signs that will make each location easily identifiable.
• All stops shared with TriMet will have new YCT signage on them.
• The current signs at the Yamhill County Transit Center in McMinnville will be upgraded with new signage.

Beginning Sunday March 10, you’ll start to see temporary signs being placed along Route 2, with permanent signs coming to select locations in early April. Continue to check our website for updates on project milestones, timeline, and completion dates!

Here’s a quick look at the different kinds of bus stop signs we’ll be implementing.

The temporary signs are vertical panels that identify the bus stop and feature a QR code that allows you to directly access the schedule page of the YCT website. Our ultimate goal is to provide permanent improvements to the infrastructure of bus stops, a process that will take time.

In the meantime, you’ll see us mark our bus stops this way, which will be replaced with permanent posts and signs in the future.

The typical bus stop consists of two signs and a post that meet accessibility and legibility requirements under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Our new bus stop signs will note which routes serve the stop, and which direction they are headed. A six-digit ID will also be displayed, which will allow riders to look up the bus stop online and receive arrival information.

Waiting areas for buses should be safe and comfortable for all our riders, but we know that not all streets have room for these types of transit improvements. This is why we’re working to identify locations that can feasibly receive Simme Seats and bus shelters like the ones pictured below.

A number of transit shelters are already out on the system, equipped with system information and timetables for our riders.

YCT is committed to providing safe and accessible waiting and boarding areas for all. We are working with our partner jurisdictions and communities to build and improve bus stops in compliance with federal standards set forth under the ADA.

While streets, roads, and sidewalks are under the stewardship of cities, Yamhill County, or the state of Oregon, YCT is working with these partners to identify opportunities for enhancing bus stops and access to transit. These capital improvement projects will benefit riders, support nearby transportation projects, and create a higher quality transit experience for all.
